  1. Botanical Classification: Despite commonly being referred to as a nut, coconuts are technically classified as a fruit, specifically a drupe. They grow on the coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera), which is native to tropical regions.

  2. Parts of the Coconut: A coconut consists of several parts, including the outer husk, the fibrous mesocarp or “coir,” the hard shell, the inner seed or “nut,” and the white edible flesh known as coconut meat. Inside the coconut, there’s also coconut water, a refreshing and hydrating liquid.

  3. Culinary Uses: Coconut meat can be eaten raw or used in various dishes and desserts. It’s commonly grated or shredded and used in both sweet and savory recipes, such as curries, cakes, cookies, and salads. Coconut milk, made by blending coconut meat with water, is a common ingredient in Southeast Asian and Indian cuisines, used in curries, soups, and sauce.
